Pollen Extracts

An Interview with Dallas Clouatre, Ph.D.

Dallas Clouatre, Ph.D., is a researcher, writer, and nutritional consultant. He is the author of several books, including Pollen Extracts for Prostate Health.

AIM: What is the prostate?
  • Clouatre: The prostate is a small, walnut-shaped combination of organ and gland that sits at the mouth of the bladder. The urethra, which is the tube through which urine passes, goes through the center of the prostate. It has a number of functions, including controlling urine volume and flow. If something goes wrong with the prostate, you’re going to have problems with urine flow.

AIM: How does it control the urine flow?
  • Clouatre: At least 30 percent of the prostate is actually a muscular-type tissue. When relaxed, the prostate applies pressure to the urethra, inhibiting urine flow. When you contract the muscle, it opens the urethra, allowing urine flow.

AIM: Why do men begin to have prostate problems as they hit their 50s?
  • Clouatre: The prostate goes through a period of rapid growth up through puberty, and then it stops growing. Unfortunately, around the age of 50 the prostate will slowly start growing again. This growth is generally referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH.

AIM: How does this affect men?
  • Clouatre: The most obvious impact is that you have difficulty voiding the bladder. The symptoms will vary. If you’re not emptying the bladder completely, you’re going to have a problem with waking up in the middle of the night, even several times, because you’re only emptying say 10 percent of the bladder at a time. This is called nocturia. Other symptoms include dribbling and a weak urine stream.

AIM: What causes this growth?
  • Clouatre: You are generally going to have three components in prostate problems. One will be inflammation. The second may be muscle spasms in the urethra and in the neck of the bladder. Finally, there are changes in the hormonal levels in the body.

AIM: Hormonal level?
  • Clouatre: Yes. Men produce less testosterone and less estrogen as they age. As the ratio of testosterone to estrogen declines, the body tries to compensate by making another compound called dihydrotestosterone, or DHT. The body also reduces its clearance—its elimination—of DHT from the tissues. DHT binds to the prostate and signals growth.

AIM: So, we are making more DHT and clearing less of it. This binds to the prostate, and the prostate grows and you have BPH.
  • Clouatre: Right, and we get all the problems associated with being unable to void urine because the prostate is growing.

AIM: What can we do about this?
  • Clouatre: Start with the diet. Cut out alcohol and try to avoid spicy foods. Look at basic nutrition, adding a certain amount of vitamin B6 and the minerals magnesium and zinc. Walk 20 to 30 minutes a day.

The preferred supplement is a pollen extract—mainly, rye pollen extract. There are three primary roles for pollen extract for prostate health.

The first is an anti-inflammatory role. This is because the pollen extracts have a powerful antioxidant effect. Then there is the smooth muscle-relaxing role. Pollen extracts can actually help the smooth muscle of the urethra; this will help control urine flow better. The final affect of pollen extracts on the prostate is to improve the clearance of DHT. If we clear this, the prostate will not enlarge. This also means that you’re not dealing with a symptom any more; you’re dealing with one of the primary causes of prostate enlargement.

This three-way action is very unique. Other products used for the prostate have only one type of action. If you take enough, flower pollen extract really will give benefits within the first three weeks. You’ll see less nighttime urinating and a stronger stream.

AIM: So you recommend pollen extracts to maintain prostate health?
  • Clouatre: Yes.
